Living it up in Life Science!

January 21, Wednesday

Science:

Warm Up: Sketch a diagram of an animal or plant cell. Identify any of the parts that it might have its nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, Golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticulum.

  1. Students received the study guide for the chapter.  They should complete these as we read each section and keep them in their notebooks.  The study guide explains exactly what information students must know for the test.  Students should review the information nightly.
  2. Students read 9.1 independently and completed the vocabulary and main idea template.  See the template examples on pg. 280.  These belong in the notebook.  Students may write all of this on the same sheet of paper. These will be items in the notebook.
  3. Students completed the 9.1 review.  This should be finished as homework.
  4. Ticket out: List the 4 characteristics of living things.  (This is written down and handed into me as students leave class.)

Homework: Do the study guide for 9.1 only. Finish the 9.1 review questions if needed. Remember, you had time to finish this in class. If you find yourself with a lot to do tonight, ask yourself how you are using time in class.
Social Studies: EQ What are the responsibilities of leadership?

Warm Up:  What personal skills do you believe the president should possess?

1.  Return rough drafts of essays.  Students should write their final copies of the essays.

Thursday, Jan. 14

ScienceToday we completed the chapter review for chapter 7. We did all of page 231 and up to number 26 on pg. 232. This will be a tremendous help for the test. If you were absent today, you will need to turn this in when you return.

Social StudiesWe began writing our essay “If I Were President”. Students are required to write a 5-paragraph essay to describe how they would change things if elected president. Most students completed very little of this today. You should be thinking of how you would help your country if you were president. Why would you do this?

Wednesday, Jan. 14

ScienceWe watched a Brainpop video about classification and the six kingdoms. We took a quiz over the videos. If you were out today, you may write me ten facts about classification and ten facts about the different kingdoms. This will make up for your missing quiz.

After the video, we also did a chart of the six kingdoms. They should be completed as follows:
1. Turn your paper sideways. Write the names of the kingdoms across the top in RED.
2. Write characteristics to describe each of the kingdoms in BLUE below each kingdom.
3. Finally, give 3 examples of organisms in each of the kingdoms. Write these in GREEN.

Your homework for science is to finish up the chart on the kingdoms. Study for your test on Friday.

Social StudiesWe read chapter 15, section 2 and completed an atlas activity.
Study for your map test on Friday.

Tuesday, Jan. 13

Science:  We reviewed dichotomous keys.  We completed several practice sheets over this.  I also gave out review sheets with directions for studying for Friday’s test.  Please have these signed and returned tomorrow.   Students should write out the answers for questions ending in 7.1 and 7.2. This means that the questions are located in chapter 7, sections 1 or 2. We began reading 7-3.

Homework: Make sure you understand how to use a dichotomous key.  Read over the study guide.  Try to answer without looking in the book first. Check your answer by the book. Get study guide signed.  You should also make sure your notebook is in order.  Check your table of contents.  Is everything in your notebook?  Have you finished your cover?
Table of Contents: 1. cover 2. TOC 3. 7-1 Reading Sheet 4. Outline 7.1 or Notetaking Study Guide 5. Taxonomy Worksheet 6. Pg. 218 questions 7. “Systems of Classification” puzzle
8. Chapter 7 Vocabulary 9. Norno Dichotomous Key Activity

Science:  We did a review of the countries of Asia. We also used the data at the beginning of the unit to decide which country in Southwest Asia we would like best to live.

Homework:  Study for your map test on Friday.  Remember, you should know where the countries of Iraq, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Sudan, Saudia Arabia, and Egypt are located.  You should also be able to locate the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Suez Canal, Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and the Jordan River.  Good luck!

Monday, Jan. 12

Science-Today, we completed a research activity on the different kingdoms.  For homework, students were to make sure that pg. 218 was finished and ready to be graded Tuesday.  They should also be studying sections 1 and 2 of the text.  Also, have parents sign agendas EVERY night except Friday night.

Extra Credit:  You should find the scientific names of 20 unique organisms.  Find some interesting critters!  You will simply write out the common name followed by the scientific name.  These are due in two weeks.  Do you remember how the scientific names are written?

Gifted students are currently working on a Zooquest project.  Research should be completed by this Wednesday.

Social Studies-Today we read chapter 15, section 1.  We completed questions 1-3 at the end of the section.  We will have a map test over Southwest Asia on Friday.  Be studying!  You have the map for this.

Thursday, Jan. 8

My blog is back in business. Please read the notice that I have posted to the sidebar.

ScienceToday we read 7.2. We completed a puzzle “A System of Organization” on the different classification levels. We also started a notebook. The items in the notebook are as follows:
1. Cover 2. Table of Contents 3. Chapter 7 Reading Sheet (7-1) 4. Outline 7/1 or Notebook and Study Guide 7-1 5. Interpreting Graphics-Taxonomy 6. “A System of Classification”

Social StudiesI collected the last two Edhelper sheets. These were homework for last night. We did a map of Southwest Asia and the vocabulary for chapter 15.

As of today, Mrs. Walker will no longer be using this blog.  I cannot be responsible for the content of the advertisements on this page.  As soon as I find an alternative source for posting class information, I will let you know.  Please continue to check the student agendas.

Tuesday, Dec. 16

We read 5.3 in the text.  You should read this at home again tonight.  Tomorrow we will have a quiz over it.  We worked on a study guide for the quiz tomorrow.  Study this tonight in order to prepare.  Quiz yourself for at least 15 minutes.  Read 5.2 and 5.3 again and make sure that you know the vocabulary.

In social studies, we will be retaking the map test over Southeast Asia.

Monday, Dec. 15

Today, we reviewed 5.2 in the textbook.  We also completed a review sheet of this section.

Homework:  We should write 3 multiple choice questions for 5.2 and get our agendas signed tonight.

Friday, December 12

Science-We watched a video about the domestication of dogs. If you were absent today, please write a 3-paragraph report on how dogs became domesticated for human use.

Social Studies-We took our map tests today. If you were absent, be prepared to take it when you return. Some of us did not score high enough on this test. Retakes are Monday.
